A Message from the Head of Tay Creggan

In a week of female empowerment, despite the Matilda's loss, I needed to remind our Year 9s that supporting and being kind to each other is really important.

On Tuesday, we joined the rest of Strathcona in our green and gold hoping for a victory. We even had our own soccer sessions this week! I spoke to the girls about how difficult it is at times to speak up, but that each and every girl has the opportunity to decide what sort of person they wish to be and how they will treat others. Rebecca Sparrow, one of Australia's pre-eminent teen speakers put it best in her blog post: The Mean Behaviour Has to Stop

This week has also been Science Week and Miss Grace has spent time throughout the week offering a range of activities - everything from making your own lip balm to quizzes and movies. Students are working on their Chemistry unit at the moment, so there's been plenty of experimentation and hands-on learning.

A few more business cards have been submitted this week, with all but 10 businesses having successfully secured their SEED funding. Talk now turns to product development and marketing as groups try to perfect their products and enhance their offerings.

We wish our Snowsports competitors and Ms Mills good luck as they head to Mt Buller next week to compete in the Interschool competition.

Best wishes,

Karyn Murray

Year 9 DAV Debating

Year 9 Debating Leader, Sharon Zhou's report on the final round of DAV Debating for 2023.

This week, the Year 9 debaters competed in the last Round of debating arguing on the topic of "That we regret the use of participation awards."

Team 1, made up of Edilyn Wong, Pearl Drieberg and Saidie Schlicht came out with a win, the best speaker being Pearl Drieberg (Second Speaker). Team 2 consisted of Claire Dai, Helen He and Amelia Lau, who had an incredibly close debate, but ultimately resulted in a loss. Both teams displayed commendable skill during all the debates.

We would like to thank Mrs Cooper, our Debating Coach and Mentor for her support this season - we have learned a great deal about the art of conveying an argument.

World Vision 40 Hour Famine

The World Vision 40 Hour Famine is running over the weekend of the 25-27 of August. Students are encouraged to register on the World Vision website and enter their School as Strathcona. Students can select what they wish to give up for 40 hours. It may be phones, social media, texting, furniture items or anything of your choice. On the 40 Hour Famine weekend, students will undertake their challenge alongside other courageous participants from around Australia.

The experience offers valuable insights into the struggles faced by famine-affected children. By participating in the challenge students can help raise funds for World Vision’s famine fighting programs.

We would love as many students as possible to sign up and contribute. Additionally, we may be in the running to have some of our students visit Cambodia and witness World Vision’s work with children in that region.

Strathcona Parent Seminars

Anxiety, perfectionism and over perfectionism with Dr Celeste Merrigan

Anxiety is a normal condition, and it is important not to pathologize its presence. It heightens our awareness, makes us strive to be better and keeps us safe. Similarly in a range of environments individuals are encouraged to be aspirational, we are rewarded for high levels of perseverance in the face of difficulty, skill development and outcomes (Perfectionism). Anecdotally and clinically, we know there is at times at strong connected between these two things.

Anxiety, perfectionism and over perfectionism … what is the similarity and difference between the emotional and behavioural experience of each of these presentations…. What is helpful about them… and when do they become impairing? The discussion will highlight a practical understanding and approaches to working with the experience of Anxiety and perfectionism.

About the Guest Speaker:

Dr Celeste Merrigan is a Fellow of the Australian Psychology Society and former Chair of the College of Clinical Psychologists and a Doctorate in Clinical Child, Adolescent and Family Psychology.

Celeste is a former clinical and academic fellow of Psychology Department of the Royal Children's Hospital, and Research Fellow of Murdoch Children's Research Institute, engaged in coordinating and teaching in the Doctor of Psychology (Child Specialisation) at the University of Melbourne and former lecture in the Schools of Public Health and Psychological Science, Latrobe University. She continues to provide guest lectures to doctoral students at Melbourne, Monash and Latrobe Universities and provides clinical and research supervision to a range of professionals and post-graduate students in psychology from the major universities working in hospitals and other settings. She has been a guest reviewer for the Australian Psychologist and the Journal of Family Studies and expert reviewer for program materials for the 'KidsMatter' Project an Australian Government Initiative to improve mental health and wellbeing in school children and implemented through schools and kindergartens.
